    • Drie Fonteinen

On a site along the canal in Beersel near Brussels, the Drie Fonteinen brewery consists of a an existing cask hall that will be expanded with a new brewery and connected craft and production programs. The new volumes are radially arranged around the existing cask-hall. A large central public space offers a panoptic view of all the surrounding functions; these functions become vitrines around this new public space. A colonnade gallery extends into the industrial column structure of the new volumes and orders both landscape and buildings. The precedent of the monastic brewery, where landscape and built forms are part of an integrated whole, is here highly relevant. The brewery is designed as part of the wider municipality. The brewery acts as a lantern on the street side, the adjacent street is traffic-calmed and the master plan integrates a collection of different public spaces. The newly planted orchard forms part of a walking route, from which one can catch a glimpse of the brewery activity and which leads to the multipurpose hall / café / tasting rooms that form the centre to the collection of buildings. The public space, in the heart of the plan, can serve as marketplace, events square, beer festival, etc.
