      The current configuration of Les Halles in Paris suffers from an urban configuration bereft of interaction between the ground level park and the gargantuan basement on which it almost inadvertently stands. The vast underground contains not only huge surfaces of program but also two transport stations. Together these stations form one of the most intensely used and important transport hubs in the entire city. The proposal of OMA/XDGA/ONE seeks to establish a more direct relationship between the two existing worlds and amplify the richness and intensity of both through interaction. The main gesture is the excavation of a single valley, which with almost surgical precision exposes the most varied moment in the underground; a slice of programmatic accessibility which unites the city with shopping, cinema complex, cultural programs and both metro and RER stations. In a dialogue between ground plane and basement, further locations have been identified within the complex existing structure where extrusion or excavation can further diversify and enrich the new urban experience.
