Situated on the outskirts of Rome, the master plan for the extension of the University Campus Bio-Medico is an occasion to think about a new way of living a university campus in the unique settings of the Capital of Italy.

Symmetry is a historical proven concept in order to install presence. The Architectural Focus, phase 1 of the master plan, is conceived as a scale repetition of the adjacent existing hospital, having the same footprint set at 137 X 103m. The new two stories high building then floats 4,5 m above a public square and connects through the existing. Twelve patios giving light, access and interaction between the covered square and the new building perforate this floating horizontal volume. It is the new identity and landmark of UCBM campus, where doctors, students, researchers and visitors come together by living within a multi-functional building.
Phase 2 completes the vision for the long term development of the campus. The future master plan’s development is organized around a central monumental green sloping strip from north to south oriented following the topography of the site. A clear structure is thus installed which acts as a green centre for the new campus life. The strip ends on a new mineral square: this is the first main public space constructed on the campus and will act as a hinge between the existing and the new.

In 1977’s short documentary “Powers of Ten”, Ray and Charles Eames described the world in a logarithmic scale. Likewise, we imagine “Potentia Trium” to belong to three scales, the Macro, or the “Urban”, the Meso, or the “Public”, and the Micro, or the “Building”. This is also as an analogy to UCBM’s own way of integrating 3 disciplines, Medicine, Bioengineering and Nursing which together, encompasses all stages of life.
